Quick Tip No. 2 | The Focal Point

Have you ever been listing to someone tell a story and they’re just meandering on - there’s no direction, seemingly no purpose and you just want to yell “GET TO THE POINT!”? Well, having a room without a focal point isn’t quite so frustrating, but it can feel similarly directionless and without purpose.

The focal point will help ground and center the furniture arrangement in the space. Rather than just having furniture floating haphazardly, arranging it around a focal point will center a grouping on something and make it feel more purposeful. It can also help define what you are doing in the space. For example - if the focal point is a TV, you’re watching media. If it’s a bar, you’re likely entertaining.

What are some common focal points?

  • A fireplace

  • A beautiful view outdoors, or even an opening to the outdoors

  • An architectural feature in the home

  • A TV

  • Artwork

Focal points can be something that already exists in the home, or it can be one that is created through the design. It can also something that we manipulate with the design. Oftentimes clients want a TV in the space but want to avoid that being the focal point of the design.

If you need help determining what your room’s focal point is, or need help space planning around it, our virtual design services can help with that!
