An Interior Design Hot Take

Today we have a hot take - an opinion that may be unpopular: I’m not the biggest fan of accent walls.

Granted, I always say there’s a time and a place in design to break the rules, even if the ones you set for yourself, so I won’t say you’ll never see an accent wall in my designs, but it’s not a go-to for me.

Why?

  • Accent walls risk making your space look unfinished - as if you may have wanted to do all of the walls but ran out out of time or the funds to do so.

  • Accent walls pull the design focus to one area of the space and that can easily create an imbalance in the room.

  • Lastly, accent walls create too much of a contrast agains the other walls in the space. Wallpaper + contrast wallpaper is ok. But wallpaper + painted drywall can feel a bit cold.

What are your thoughts? Do you have a hot design take you’re willing to share?
