4 Kitchen Design Trends for 2024
We’re 5 months into 2024 and I just completed a few continuing education classes on kitchen design. One of these classes touched on a few kitchen trends that are strong into 2024.
Before we jump into the list, a word on trends: we never want to decorate solely based on trends. My priorities are always finding my clients style and determining the functionality that works for their lifestyle and interior design needs. Some clients will want to integrate trends into their designs, while others will want to focus on timelessness. In my opinion, trends always hold some degree of influence with designers simply because we see the trends in the images we see, materials and furniture that we source from. We don’t always need to follow, but it’s hard to not always be aware.
With that being said, I am loving the direction that kitchen design is heading:
Green is going strong
We’ve been seeing color coming back into kitchens for a while, with green being a very popular choice for cabinetry. All reports are that its not leaving anytime soon. The shade doesn’t matter - we’re seeing light sage all the way through a deeper forest or emerald. The tip to make this trend feel more timeless is to use a green that has neutral undertones, which will make it read like a neutral in your home.
Shaker cabinetry… but with a twist
Shaker cabinet doors are another classic that have been hot for a while now. They are still very popular, however we are seeing little changes - slimmer rails (think 1” rather than 2”+), or the addition of a bead inside the rail that adds a little hint of a traditional element.
Beadboard
Beadboard is back! We’re seeing it and using it inset on a shaker door front, or on the back panel of open shelving in a kitchen. Another alternative that I’m interested in seeing, is headboard replace shiplap as the go to for walls & ceilings. Shiplap has had a strong run, but I am ready to move on to something fresh.
Modern Traditional & Industrial Farmhouse
In years’ past the big trend was Modern Farmhouse. That’s no longer the case. The farmhouse aesthetic is trending towards more of an industrial look. The bigger change we’re seeing is coming from a move back towards traditional design. However - we’re calling this “modern traditional” meaning that it’s feeling fresh to 2024, not an older, stuffy traditional. You may have heard of a few micro-trends that fall into this category: “Coastal Grandmother” “Grandmillenial” and “Granny-Chic”. These trends are all referencing the classic, traditional design aesthetic with an updated twist.
What are your thoughts? Are you excited to decorate in any of these hot interior design trends for 2024?
