A Colorful Dining Room Design

I’m excited to share more about this colorful dining room today! I’ve shared the adjoining rooms from this project previously, and we’re finally getting to the fabulous dining room. As is the case with many dedicated dining rooms, the layout is fairly simple. In this case, we were reusing the client’s existing dining table. I gave the option to reuse the existing chairs, or buy new down the road, and the rest was a blank slate. The lounge, which was located directly across the foyer, was designed with dark walls and light furniture, so I opted for the inverse in this room: light walls and pops of color throughout.

The main focal point of the space was the client’s existing Mondrian print, which we featured on the wall opposite the foyer entrance. This piece of artwork is what set the stage for all of the colors throughout the first floor. I always recommend placing art lights over featured art pieces, and we also flanked the piece with decorative sconces. Having the ability to dim the overhead lights and introduce a secondary layer of lighting with sconces and art lights will give the space a wonderful ambiance.

The sideboard that anchors that feature wall is not a piece that coordinates with the dining table - instead it is a painted piece. The days of a matching dining set are long gone, and selecting something in specialized finish for the credenza can be a great way to add in some visual interest. This piece can be a painted piece that pulls colors from the color scheme, or a metallic piece that adds in some sparkle and shine.
