5 Ways to Make Your Bedroom More Serene

Bed with luxurious sheets and coverlet sham and sconce

When working on a bedroom transformation, its my goal as the interior designer to turn it into whatever dream the client has. Most often, my clients ask for a serene getaway, as if they’re in a hotel room - not their everyday bedroom. 5 Tips for a serene bedroom design? Right this way:

  1. Add dimmer switches to your lights: definitely for overhead fixtures, but you can also buy these adapters for table lamps if they don’t have the dimmer built in to the knob. Being able to dim lights in the evenings will help keep the light from feeling harsh.

  2. Speaking of lights, make sure you have accent lighting in the room, not just overhead lighting.

  3. Use muted tones. That doesn't mean that you’re limited to neutrals, but if you’re choosing a green, select on with some grey to it rather than something bright and energizing.

  4. Put away clutter. Whether you organize it behind closed doors, simply tuck it away or remove it from the bedroom altogether, getting the clutter out of sight will instantly improve your state of mind.

  5. Don’t skimp on the bedding. Shop around to find out which sheets are your favorite and buy two matching sets. Layer in some texture with blankets, add in a pillow or two - but not so much that making your bed becomes a chore. Make that bed feel luxurious - you spend 1/3 of your life in it!
